Surfing Tamraght in winter, month by month: water temperature, wetsuit and waves (October–April)
Surfer Element is paid by the houses listed here, and we only represent these three houses.
Climate figures checked on 2026-11-06. All monthly sea and air temperatures below come from one dataset, Weather Atlas, Agadir climate (page last updated 2024-02-07; it does not name its underlying data source or averaging period). They describe Agadir, about 16 to 18 km south of Tamraght, so treat them as a close guide rather than a measurement for the village. Our village guide uses a Tamraght sea dataset that runs about a degree cooler.
The short version
Tamraght is the village on Morocco’s Atlantic coast where the three houses we work with are, and this is what surfing there looks like from October to April, month by month. Tamraght and Taghazout are about 6 to 8 km apart on the same stretch of coast, so the Agadir figures below are a close guide for both. For the village itself, including year-round weather, see the Tamraght village guide.
When is the best time to surf near Tamraght? Roughly October to April, when north-west Atlantic swells arrive most often, with the biggest swells usually from December to March; beginners can also learn in the smaller summer waves. This follows The Surf Atlas (updated 2026-04-20), which calls December to March the peak and June to August the low season. The two Surf Atlas guides define the low season slightly differently (June to August in one, April to September in the other), so treat the edges of the season as approximate.
Over winter the sea off Agadir averages about 17.5 to 18.3 °C from December to April. O’Neill’s wetsuit chart suggests a 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm suit for 18 to 20 °C water and a 4/3 mm or 5/4 mm suit for 12 to 17 °C, and calls the chart a guideline.
| Month | Sea °C (Agadir) | Air °C, average low to high (Agadir) | Wetsuit, per O’Neill’s chart | Swell pattern | Beginners, per The Surf Atlas |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 20.7 | 15 to 25 | 2 mm suit or 3/2 mm (20.7 °C sits between O’Neill’s bands) | North-west swells pick up; the points switch back on, below full winter intensity | Tamraght is the main beginner beach; described as good |
| November | 19.4 | 12 to 24 | 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm | Bigger, more regular swell | Workable for improvers around Tamraght; the points get more demanding |
| December | 18.3 | 9 to 21 | 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm | Peak season (December to March) | Tamraght and Imsouane (a separate surf town further north) are the usual beginner choices; the points suit more experienced surfers |
| January | 18.3 | 8 to 20 | 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm | Peak season | As December |
| February | 17.5 | 9 to 21 | 4/3 mm (the one thickness in both neighbouring bands) | Peak season | As December |
| March | 17.7 | 11 to 22 | 4/3 mm (as February) | Peak season | As December |
| April | 18.0 | 12 to 22 | 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm | Leftover Atlantic energy, usually in more manageable sizes | Fun around Taghazout; The Surf Atlas suggests it suits intermediates best |
Sources: sea and air temperatures from Weather Atlas, Agadir climate for Agadir, checked 2026-11-06 (air temperatures are averages of daily lows and highs, rounded to whole degrees). Wetsuit column applies O’Neill’s wetsuit chart to those sea temperatures; the guide is general, not specific to Morocco. Swell and beginner columns summarise The Surf Atlas. These are general patterns, and what you can surf on a given day depends on the forecast.
How warm is the sea in Agadir in winter?
The sea off Agadir averages about 17.5 to 18.3 °C from December to April, and February is the coldest month in that table at about 17.5 °C (Weather Atlas, Agadir climate, checked 2026-11-06). Other sites differ by about a degree: seatemperature.info, which says it averages the past 10 years of satellite and in-situ data, lists 17.2 °C for January and 16.6 °C for February.
What wetsuit do you need to surf in Morocco in winter?
A 4/3 mm suit is the middle choice for most people in Agadir’s winter sea of roughly 17 to 18 °C. O’Neill’s wetsuit chart gives these bands: 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm for 18 to 20 °C, 4/3 mm or 5/4 mm for 12 to 17 °C, and a 2 mm suit or shorty for 21 to 25 °C. It says the chart is only a guideline and that other factors play a role. Applied to Agadir’s winter sea of roughly 17 to 18 °C, that points to a 3/2 mm to 5/4 mm suit with 4/3 mm in the middle, and a thicker or thinner choice depends on how cold you run. Whether a wetsuit comes with your stay is something we’ll confirm with you at booking, so ask us before you decide what to pack.

(Weather Atlas, checked 2026-11-06; The Surf Atlas.)
January is among the cooler months at sea. The Weather Atlas table has December at the same 18.3 °C and February lower at 17.5 °C, while seatemperature.info puts January at 17.2 °C. Air temperatures average about 8 °C at night to 20 °C in the day, so mornings and evenings feel cooler than the afternoon.
Experienced surfers who want the bigger waves should read the Taghazout points guide and the Tamraght spot guide together.
Surfing Tamraght in February
In February the sea off Agadir averages about 17.5 °C, the lowest of the seven months in the Weather Atlas table; 4/3 mm is the one thickness listed in both of O’Neill’s neighbouring bands. Air temperatures average about 9 °C at night to 21 °C in the day. February can still be cold at sea, so don’t pack as if spring has arrived.
Surfing Tamraght in March
In March the sea off Agadir averages about 17.7 °C (4/3 mm on O’Neill’s chart), and March is still within the December to March peak swell period, so expect the same pattern as winter: Tamraght’s beaches for beginners, the points for experienced surfers. (Weather Atlas, checked 2026-11-06.)
Air temperatures average about 12 °C at night to 22 °C in the day.
Spanish readers: Semana Santa moves every year with Easter, which can fall between late March and late April. In 2027, Palm Sunday is on 21 March, Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Sunday on 28 March (Catholic Church Times, Easter 2027), so Holy Week falls before April that year. It is a popular travel week for Spain, so if you’re travelling that week, book earlier. The fit check helps you pick a house by the atmosphere you want.
And the summer?
Summer waves around Tamraght are usually smaller and less consistent than in winter. The Surf Atlas describes June to August as the low season, mostly windswell, suited to beginners and improvers, with strong winds a recurring issue and worst in summer. The sea off Agadir averages about 19.7 °C in June, 20.2 °C in July and 20.8 °C in August (Weather Atlas, checked 2026-11-06), and you can still learn then.
Summer means fewer big days and more flat ones. If regular waves matter more to you than a quiet line-up, winter and early spring are the better fit.
